We began noticing holes in our lawn about 2 years ago. A few holes turned into many, a terrible mess of our newly landscaped lawn.
We saw a very fast critter, scurrying in/out of the holes. So fast, we had to watch to see it again. Then we had to google to figure out what the creature was. We narrowed it down to a vole. We called Jack at Kawartha Pest Control to ask if there was a remedy. Nope. He can make ants, mice and ladybugs disappear but not voles. They are impossible he said. Back to google, there's an answer for everything there. Well, let's just say that some of the suggestions there may have been stolen from Wile E Coyote's adventures to catch the roadrunner - appropriate for a 60's cartoon but not in a back yard. While we did give up, mother nature rescued our lawn.
Fast forward a year and the food chain hit our yard. What may have otherwise been feared became welcome when it moved in...a Garter snake. Gotcha Voles -- so Hoover is now his name since he seems to have hoovered up all the voles! As grateful as we are for his hard work and irregardless of however harmless Hoover is, just this morning, like other occasions when slithering by, he still provokes a scream.
