There are three kinds of cottagers on Anstruther...the hockey parents who close up on labour day weekend, the typical cottager who isn't a hockey parent will close up on thanksgiving weekend, and the rest are the ones who are proud that only the arrival of ice will make them give up their boat.
This year it won't be the ice that will push them into giving up their boat, it will be the Trent Severn Waterway or fish spawning, whichever you prefer to blame. The Trent Severn Waterway controls the water level and puts logs in and out at the dam to control the water level of the larger lower lakes. They say that the lower water levels are also needed for fish spawning.
They dropped the water level with precipitation assumptions and not actual conditions. This was one of the most spectacular septembers in a long time, we only had 1/2 the precipitation that was expected but that now leaves us with very low water levels.
Many of the cottagers that still have boats in their slips are now not able to use their slip due to inadequate water levels. Please consider finishing your season soon.
