There was once a time when a boater had a closed mind to the possibility of a pontoon. Not anymore. Boaters are migrating to higher‑horsepower engines for their pontoons, putting a twist on the old expression “This isn’t your grandfather’s pontoon.”
Pontoons CAN have speed. Put a larger motor on it and you'll be pulling the kids around on their tube or wakeboard. A pontoon is big enough for you and your friends to stretch out to enjoy the sun or if you've had too much there's protection under the bimini. Expand your dock space...with a pontoon you've got instant comfort with cushy furniture down at the water. Turn on the tunes and bring down the drinks and snacks, there's a table on board for them.
If it seems like you are seeing more pontoons out on the water - you are.
We've taken a few paragraphs from a recent Mercury newsletter...
The pontoon market has been one of the fastest growing U.S. boat segments over the past few years. According to Statistical Surveys Inc., sales in the pontoon category grew 9.4 percent in 2016, continuing a trend of year-over-year growth that has persisted since 2009.
According to Michelle Dauchy, Mercury Marine chief marketing officer, factors contributing to the popularity of pontoon boats include “their versatility, their ability to accommodate the needs of families, and the fact that outboard engines have become so smooth and quiet.”
More power adds to the appeal. “I’ve never seen demand for pontoons as rich as it is today,” said Randy Caruana, Mercury Marine vice president, North & Central America and Asia Pacific. “The pontoon market will continue to grow – thanks, in part, to customer demand for these boats paired with high‑horsepower Mercury Verado outboard engines.”
