We had visitors to our restaurant today with beautiful scottish accents. The are from Anstruther they tell us...the OTHER Anstruther. They were visiting Canada and were in Peterborough and realized that Anstruther Lake was only an hour away and then found themselves on our deck with a beverage and a view.
Named after their Anstruther about 140 years ago they presumed? Not sure, we answered, but yes, it could be after the scottish namesake but we know it wasn't done 140 years ago. With 6 years at the lake, we are still the 'new guys' so we are not sure where 'Anstruther' came from but we've been told that the original name for the Lake was Eagle. At what point or why it was changed we do not know.
Anyone out there know the history?
While we are all very familiar with the name, we have to spell it out to everyone and pronunciation...well...most outsiders say "AN-STROOO-THER" but not sure how they get to that.
No sleep last night at all.
Finally fell asleep but we woke up abruptly at 1;45 am, the phone was ringing. Gotta be an emergency at that hour...right? Nope, on answering the phone, I found it was a digital voice announcing a text message. Great. A text message to a land line. At 1;45 am. NOT COOL. I called the number. The guy realized only then that there ARE still landlines out there and not every kijiji ad is a cell phone. Sorry, I assumed it was a cell phone he said. Why do people shop kijiji at 2am?
Our ad was for those blue styrofoam floats that come out of the old docks that we remove when we build a new one. Better to sell them than have them end up in the landfill. The downside to these ads...this is not the first text to our landline in the middle of the night, there was one other only a few days earlier. Time to revise the ad so there is no phone number so the only reply is via email.
So - being 2am and wide awake - Stephen Colbert kept me occupied...until the lights flashed, the tv went silent and the room stayed dark. Great. Hydro is out.
The power failure affected 8,000 homes within Apsley and Coe Hill. Restoration was expected by 6am... and was back sooner.
We are not aware that anyone is still without hydro.
It's already June and today's weather is spectacular but is an exception to most other days since the season begun. Most days have been damp, rainy and cold.
Being June, it's early to start thinking about Regatta events but we do have a sample of the Regatta shirt now in the store -- the first order was placed just a few minutes ago.
The cotton version of the 2017 Regatta shirt design can be seen below. The cotton version of the shirt is mint green but the athletic wicking style will be lime green (mint is not available in athletic).
In past years, we would take a lucky guess on what sizes to order and every year, there would be people disappointed that we ran out of their size and we would be stuck with sizes nobody wanted. Pre-orders was our solution to this and it worked out great. Last year was the first year to pre-order the regatta shirts, hopefully everyone who wants one will get their order in before the cutoff of Monday July 4, 2017 and pickup will be available any day after July 14, 2017. The cutoff is set by the printing company and is firm as this is the busiest time of year for them. Order forms are available in the store or send us an email and we can send the form back as an attachment.
No worries...while there is still a grocery store in Apsley, it is no longer the Foodland brand, it is now known as Foodtown.
New Anstruther property listed yesterday -- and it's ROAD ACCESS!!!
We get MANY inquiries from cottagers watching for properties that are road access or cottagers who have family or friends who want to be on Anstruther. Now is your chance. There is very little inventory of properties for sale right now and it is rare for a road access to become available. This is a fantastic property located at the south end of the lake.
This won't last long, there is a showing already booked for tomorrow.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
