While driving south one year, we asked our server at a restaurant near Savannah about the area, it just happened to be March 17th. Go to the river she said, you need to see it, it is green for St Patrick's day, dyed green for tourism we understood.
Well, St Patrick's day really should be in May on Anstruther. Everything here is green including the surface of the lake (though not like the river in Savannah). Want to have a seat on your patio chair, grab a damp paper towel first or your clothes will be green too. Arrive with a white car, it'll be green by the time you leave and you're going to need to use your windshield wipers the window will be so green you won't see out.
Pollen is everywhere. Maybe it's just that it's been a whole year since we've seen it last but it really feels like it's much thicker than normal. Not a good sign at all for allergy sufferers. The upside to all of this is the lilacs are in bloom, all the trees have filled in the landscape and the rainfall has left us with lush green grass. The grass is very green but also tall after only a few days after cutting so if you haven't been up to cut it for the first time yet, it will take patience and time.
Welcome back, our most favorite neighbours on the lake!
Anyone who has visited the lake lately has had something to say about the abundant population of mosquitoes. Great news, dragonflies were seen today for the first time this year. Dragonflies are higher on the food chain than the mosquito making their return a welcome relief.
As of March 17th, Anstruther Marina took ownership of 11 McFadden Road in Apsley to serve as an indoor showroom for our Legend and Tempest boats as well as Mercury Motors and other boating & cottage related products.
This property was previously known as "Apsley Garden and Flower Shop" and is located at the corner of McFadden and Hwy 28 on the N/E side. This location will not officially open until the new garage doors are installed but boats will temporarily be on display outside until that is done. We expect to receive the new garage doors in a few weeks.
Our new line of CR Plastics patio furniture appears to be very popular. Stock items have now been assembled and can be seen through the window at 11 McFadden until we officially open but just let us know if you want to see them in person and we can meet you there to let you inside. A few tables/chairs have been brought to the ice cream deck lakeside if you want to try out the chairs here.
In addition to new garage doors, we are renovating the inside and over time, plan to give the outside a fresh coat of paint.
Our very first 2017 Tempest has arrived and has just been rigged with a 60HP 4stroke Mercury motor. This 16.5' bowrider is a limited edition and has beautiful black and yellow accents.
An incredible price of only $19,750 +HST for a new 2017 Tempest bowrider, this price includes the 60HP 4 stroke Mercury motor as well as a galvanized trailer.
The red/black and lime green/black will be arriving over the next few weeks. Tempest is such a reliable boat, we have a few on the lake that are close to 30 years old and still holding up well.
It was a busy weekend at the marina. Thanks to all slip clients who dropped by to say hello and pick up their seasonal parking passes.
The loss of power for many between Thursday and Saturday was disappointing but we are grateful to hydro for bringing in the helicopter to expedite the restoration sooner than expected.
We often hear from Jack and Chandos cottagers that Anstruther cottagers are lucky to have a restaurant - they come all the way over to Anstruther for one - they wish they had one on their lake too. The restaurant is now open fri-sunday for breakfast and lunch and friday nights until 7pm. Our special of 1/2 price wings on fridays continues. If you've never been here for Jacqueline's breakfast, you've missed out. Her homefries are hand cut, the plate is full and the coffee is bottomless - oh and the view during breakfast - priceless :)
CR Plastics patio furniture appears to already be well known but some have asked to see it, if you want to see it in person, we now have samples at both our lakeside and hwy 28 locations.
Pontoons have become very popular and this was definitely a pontoon weekend, many were sold and new stock has been ordered. We still have a few left but over the next few weeks, we will see more from the Bayshore, Enjoy and Splash series arriving to meet the growing demand. While a pontoon is an excellent choice for taking a number of people out on the water, it is also the perfect solution to North Kawartha's problematic dock bylaw. A pontoon is like adding a comfortable living room up to your dock that has sun protection - you have instant seating and you've added square footage that the bylaw wouldn't otherwise allow for.
A quick power update...a hydro helicopter arrived at about 5pm today (Saturday) and as of about 6pm, hydro workers told us power was restored.
Last night, at about 7pm, the sky went dark and the wind picked up. We haven't seen weather like this since the tornado a few years ago. We had hail, rain and crazy winds. It all lasted about 20 minutes and from what we have heard, took down some trees.
The fire department showed up at about 8;00. They did a routine visual inspection from the public launch and saw what they thought could be smoke from the south end. We took the deputy fire chief down the lake to get a closer look and thankfully it was only mist.
We lost hydro but it was restored after about 4 hours, the north end is not as fortunate, they have been told that they can expect to have power back at 10pm Saturday.
We are a Mercury dealer, the finest motors made for watercraft.
If your motor is not going to last another season, call us for a quote on a new Merc.
A new season means a fresh season for fires. Purposeful fires that is. To have a controlled fire in North Kawartha, a fire permit is required.
Fire permits are available at no charge from Anstruther Marina. After completing your fire permit, we will sign it on behalf of the Fire Department, you keep the copy and we keep the top original which will be collected by the Fire Department for their file.
Fire permits expire after one year. If yours is now expired, drop by for a new one to last through cottage season.
