5" of ice measured from about 30' from the gasdock. As always, we will never say the ice is safe and also a reminder that 5" in one area could be much less in another part of the lake. Almost all snowmobile trails remain closed throughout Ontario with the exception of one in northern Ontario, the restaurant in the marina will open when the trails are open but anyone needing our washrooms in the meantime is welcome to come in - the repairs are almost complete but one is accessible if needed.
It is snowing today, January 12th, and the lake is covered in snow. Though the snow is good for the trails (that are not open yet), it insulates the lake's new ice and it is probably slowing the ice's further grow. Not good for those who have hopes in crossing the lake by snowmobile, it'll be a while before it's safe.
Despite temps of -10, the lake is still in thaw mode, the open water opposite the marina is now larger. we also have a puddle/hole about 50 ft in front of the boat launch and the ice is dark with cracks - but we still have ice. The very strong winds yesterday did not take out our power here at the marina though parts of Apsley had no power from 8pm - 4am.
Ok, I'm posting a new photo but really (really!) it just looks a lot like the last one. I tried to zoom in so the pic would show the opposite shore better but it didn't save -- so -- if you can zoom in somehow, you'll get a better image of the growing "anstruther puddle". Same thing is happening on the shoreline behind the marker on the left. It looks like we are in thaw mode.
Just a quick note to remind you that the boat show begins today and finishes Sunday January 17th. We will be at the ShoreMaster booth...booth #E-125.
Well it was a COLD night and day yesterday and was not kind on our plumbing. We had a pipe burst in the attic above the public washrooms last tonight. Will better assess the damage later today but it appears repairs to the ceilings/walls will be necessary. The lake won't be ready to cross for a while so that will give us time for repairs but best to visit a restroom somewhere en route until they are fixed.
This is a photo of the marina view today. We mis-spoke...the lake isn't entirely frozen, the dark shadow across from the marina running from Founds Island to the shore on the right and over a bit is still water. The diamonds that were growing on trees along the roadway last week are now gone but Anstruther Lake now has a blanket of diamonds, it sparkles in the sun.
Still trying to figure out the webcam issue but seeing this photo may help those in need of a current lake pic.
ICE!!! The lake is completely white and we have a mist over parts. It is sooo cold but the lakeview is beautiful. Apologies that the webcam is still down.
So - Katchawanooka was mostly ice on the trip down to ptbo this morning. (Big) Buckhorn was ice covered mostly with the exception of the area at the bridge.
Looking out from the restaurant windows, the opposite side appears to now have ice stretching from the marker to shore. It may go further down the lake but the open area is still rough and very much water.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
