Take care on the water bodies -- apparently sleds went in somewhere near Wilberforce yesterday and someone has died.
Also note - we have heard that Mississauga Lake had open water as recent as last week.

Please see Buckhorn District Snowmobile Club's website for Jan 28th warnings of safety concern over lakes and swamps. Trails remain closed. www.bdsc.ca
Hello Anstruther -- Its a gorgeous day at the lake today. We did a fresh measurement of the ice and got 10". Not a lot of progress over last week. As always, this does not mean we feel it is safe to cross, use your own judgement and be aware that the thickness will vary in other parts.
We had a few inches of snow overnight which will help the trails. The ice on the lake is really good quality for cottagers hoping to make an ice rink, other than the area where sleds have travelled, the ice is very smooth and flat. Mild day, lots of water on the ice surface. On return trip from ptbo, drove along Youngs point rd and had a good view of Katchawanooka...not good...open water with waves, not just a puddle but a very big opening.
The trails still show as red at the moment but the following was posted on the Buckhorn district snowmobile club website today Jan 25, 2015;
January 25, 2015 - Update: We are opening some BDSC trails with Limited Availability today. Check the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide later this morning for specific trails and sections of trail. Riders are urged to exercise caution, as there may be exposed rock and wet areas. We still need more snow!!!! Note the following: Riders may want to avoid Les Grey's swamp on E211 north of Parking Lot 1 - As a bypass, ride up shoulder of County Rd 507 to BDSC 503 West to rejoin E211 Gravel on E108 between BDSC 505 and BDSC 506 due to recent construction. Wet spots on BDSC 509 between TMSC 495 and Salmon Lake Road. Thanks to our grooming staff for their hard work and long hours working with limited snow to get trails open! Webcam now displays a pic from today!! It is two hours behind but our techie friend is working on it and so far has been able to get that much for an update.
Marina view on Jan 23, 2016. The sky is bright, not a cloud around. Snowmobiles and people are starting to appear. Restaurant is open as of today though trails are mainly still red.
Ice Update; We have drilled about 150' from the gas dock area and found 8" of ice. Lots of slush on top. Note that the buckhorn district snowmobile club has been grooming but the trails remain closed. While we have provided an ice thickness for your convenience, we do not endorse the safety of the lake for crossing, also be aware that the thickness in front of the marina is 8" may be less elsewhere on the lake as the weather conditions impact the thickness.
Ice WARNING...word travels fast among the Anstruther community so you may have heard that at least two people (you know who they would be) have crossed the lake. We had a call earlier today from one who advises against the north end, it is not safe and may have as little as 2" in areas such as horseshoe bay -- definitely not strong enough for a snowmobile. There is also a warning that the shore area across from the marina that appeared as water in the photos last week are probably also unsafe. Best to be safe and wait a little longer.
